Samurai Swords: John Lee Katsumoto Katana
Hosokawa Katsumoto (1430-1473) was an important proconsul of the shogun in the 15th century and was a central figure in Japan during the Onin war. He fought against his father-in-law Yamana Sôzen with more than 80000 men in the former capital city Kyôto. After ten years of war Kyôto was destroyed and none of the opponents could draw on victory. We offer here a very noble samurai sword, the Katsumoto Katana by John Lee. Forged by hand in the Hon Sanmei style, one of the most extensive kinds of forging, the blade comes with three different hardened areas. The blade edge is made from hardened 1095 carbon steel, the sides are made from semi-hardened 1065 carbon steel and the core is made from low-carbon steel. A traditional sophisticated hardening by a clay coating gives an additional refining to the blade and creates an extraordinary and wonderful Hamom line. The blade's profile is in Hon Sanmei style. The sharpened blade was supplied with a fluting to reduce weight. Suitable for cutting tests: 60 HRC at the blade edge, 40 HRC at the blade's back. Iron cast Tsuba with Samurai motiv. The grip is made from wood coated with real blackened fish skin (Same). The grip's tight winding, made from cotton, is done in the traditional Katate Maki style (so called war winding). Blade clamp (Habaki) made from brass. The sword's tang is extra long manufactured and fixed to the grip by two bamboo splints (Mekugi). The scabbard is made from wood and comes with a high grade Sageo (winding). Koiguchi, Kurigata and Kojiri are made from buffalo horn, manufactured after museal pieces. Every sword comes with a certificate of authenticity and a seal to prove originality. Every sword comes with a fabric pouch and a high grade wooden collector's box. A padded wooden display stand is included with every sword. Additional information: Blade's length to Tsuba 77cm / overall length without scabbard 109,5cm / overall length with scabbard 113cm / grip length 32cm / blade's bending (Sori) 27mm / balance point (by Tsuba) ca. 13cm / blade's width (at Habaki) 3cm / blade's width at changeover to the tip (Kisaki) 2cm / Width of blade's back 7,5mm / weight without scabbard 1200g / weight with scabbard 1500g.
